SPRY LODGE'S ANNUAL FAMILY & FRIENDS BBQ

2011 BBQBrethren,

I would like to thank all of you who were able to attend and help out with the 2011 BBQ. Gord & Jan Greaves were gracious and wonderful hosts and on behalf of Spry Lodge I would like to especially thank them for opening their home.

The weather was beautiful and we were able to enjoy some fun in the pool, some games in the sun and some relaxation in the shade. Brother Fusek and I had our smokers fired up and served a feast of beef, chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs. It is a true labor of love and we enjoy the cooking almost as much as the eating!

As the sun began to set and we all were loosening our belts and refilling our cups, Tim and Wes played a few great sets for our entertainment – Thanks guys!

In total we had a group of 45 members, including their families, attend and it warmed the heart to watch our loved ones having such a good time getting to know each other.

On behalf of the Worshipful Master and the Jr. Warden, thanks again to everyone that helped put this event together and to all those who attended.

Bro. Scott McCormick
J.W. & Entertainment Committee Chairman

PONDEROSA & PATIO

This years event saw bright sunny skies and forgiving greens. We had a large attendance of Spry Brethren and friends. The relatively low cost of the golf and the ease of the course allowed us to loosen up and have a great time. Following the 9 holes, we all went over to the Muddy Water Tavern where we shared laughs on the patio, along with great food, beverages and prizes provided by Marshall Falhl, Debbie Grant, and Gary O'Rourke. Bro. Colin Thain won a beautiful chiminea for the longest drive, which he generously donated back to Spry Lodge for further fund raising.

The event was successful in raising approximately $240.00 towards the lodge. I am greatly looking forward to next years event.

Cornerstone RibbonCORNERSTONE LODGE 2010 - 2011 ACHIEVED BY SPRY LODGE NO.385

The primary purpose of the CORNERSTONE Project is to encourage and recognize lodges that plan, implement and manage a well rounded yearly lodge program that promotes lodge activities, brotherhood, charitable work and involvement in the community.

Although good planning and strong management is a vitally important component to the overall success of our lodge, it must never be forgotten that in order to maintain the momentum in our lodge our members must have a compelling idea of where the lodge needs to go, what type of members it will attract, what benefits it can provide, and how the organization needs to be perceived in the community if it is to thrive.

Value Added Benefits of the Cornerstone Project

When Spry Lodge made the decision to participate in this program we acknowledge our desire to increase the value of the experience that we provide to our membership. Our participation further exemplified our many strong traits and benefits.
o Increased lodge vitality
o Enhanced teamwork
o Increased sense of pride in the lodge
o Greater sense of accomplishment
o And, the use of the designation of “Cornerstone Lodge 2010 - 2011” on our Lodge Summons, Newsletter, Letterhead or other such lodge material.

Spry Lodge is proud to be recognized as a Cornerstone Lodge and appreciates all the hard work and commitment that our members put forth in making our lodge such a dynamic and respected Masonic Lodge,

MASONICH.I.P. CLINIC AT THE 2011 BEETON HONEY AND GARDEN FESTIVAL

This year’s MasoniChIP event was another success for Spry Lodge. The parents/guardians of 67 kids might feel a little more prepared today due to having identification packages of their children to aid in a quick and safe recovery of their child, should they ever go missing. This service is brought to the local communities, free of charge to the families, by dedicated and caring Masons.

We thank all the committed Spry Lodge Masons who gave their time and effort for the clinic on May 28th and especially the kids and wives, and members from other Masonic Lodges who helped and worked in preparation and at the clinic. A special mention goes out to Dr. Ian Lo and Dr. Harvey Kalsi, dentists operating in the Beeton Plaza, who continue to help and support this worth while program every year since Spry Lodge has been hosting the clinics.

MASONIC MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR BRO. EARL ROBINSON

The members of Spry Lodge, along with Masons from the district, were proud to perform a Masonic Memorial Service and to participate in the burial service of a past Brother and member of Spry Lodge; Bro. William “Earl” Robinson, on Tuesday May 3rd, 2011.

On February 4th, 2011, our longest serving and most elderly member, Bro. Earl Robinson, passed to the Grand Lodge Above. Bro. Robinson was born in Beeton on September 15th, 1919 and was initiated into Spry Lodge on April 15th, 1946. Shortly thereafter he left Beeton and set sail joining the Merchant Marine Corp. At the time of his passing, Bro. Robinson was living in Peterborough with his long time friend and companion, Ms. Lyla Doxtator. Lyla and Earl had been together for a great number of years and Lyla took care of our brother through numerous illnesses, including two bouts with throat cancer to which Earl finally succumbed.

Earl’s wish was to be laid to rest by his first wife in the Trinity Cemetery back home in Beeton.

Those who were able to attend this send off for Earl took great pride in paying tribute to this World War II Veteran and fraternal Brother. The service was also very meaningful to Lyla, a very special and kind woman, as she now finds some closure in the death of someone she deeply cared for.

We Cherish Earl's memory in our hearts

BRO. KARL DUBKOV INNITIATED INTO MASONRY

Spry Lodge welcomes Bro. Karl Dubkov as a member of the Lodge. Congratulations to Bro. Dubkov on his initiation into Masonry at our regular meeting on Monday April 25th, 2011. R.W. Bro. Douglas W. Hammill was present at the meeting and presented our newest E.A. with a lapel pin.

TWENTY FIVE YEAR PIN PRESENTATIONS

Congratulations go out to Bro. Ralf Klopf and Bro. Chris Miller who were both presented with twenty Five (25) year pins and certificates recognizing their milestones in service to the Craft. Brothers Klopf and Miller were both initiated on April 21st, 1986. Brothers Klopf and Miller are pictured below along with R.W. Bro. Douglass W. Hammill Deputy District Grand Master, Georgian South District, and W. Bro. Jeff Johnson Worshipful Master of Spry Lodge.

EASTER EGG HUNT AND PANCAKE BRUNCH

On Saturday morning April 23rd, 2011, Spry Lodge opened its doors to chocolate egg ravenous munchkins, as the Special Entertainment Committee organized an Easter Egg Hunt within the Lodge and Club 385, followed by a Pancake Brunch.

Easter eggs were hidden around the Lodge and banquet room for the children/grandchildren to find, some of which were hidden so well that I wouldn't be surprised if the brethren are still finding them in the weeks to come (enjoy!). Following the egg hunt pancakes and syrup with juice, coffee and tea were served to the kids, parents/grandparents and those who came just to enjoy the morning.

The costs involved in the activities were generously born by the members who organized and ran the event, with donations for the food bank being requested from those who participated. As a result a large amount of non-perishable food items was collected for the cause.

Well done to all those involved, with special thanks going out to our Special Entertainment Committee chairman, Bro. Tim O'Rourke, and Bro. J Landry (pancake aficionado).

SPRY LODGE HOST ULTIMATE TRIVIA CHALLENGE

Spry Lodge No.385 put on an Ultimate Trivia Night as a fundraising event on behalf of the District Project # 2416.

Larry WoodruffThe event was held at the Muddy Water Hotel in Beeton on Tuesday March 22nd. Sincere thanks go out to the owners for accommodating the Ultimate Trivia Night; Bro. Grant Myers and Kim Sarrugia.

Bro. Larry Woodruff, did a truly marvelous job of putting the event together and MC'ing it with such composure and joviality. Congratulations Larry.

Special mention also goes out to Andy, Karen & Scott Emslie and Bro. Drew Johnston for helping to make sure that the event ran as smoothly as it did.

A large contingent from Alliston, representing Seven Star Lodge No. 285, showed their abundance knowledge of useless information. This team of “know it alls” won the right to brag about being the Ultimate Trivia Champions for 2011.

Alliston

Slightly over $1,200.00 was raised through the event. The Spry Lodge District Project Committee, Bro. Larry Woodruff and Bro. Andy Emslie, presented the money to R.W. Bro. Douglass W. Hammill D.D.G.M. of Georgian South District during a Lodge meeting the following week. R.W. Bro. Hammill's Masonic District Project is raising awareness and funds for the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA) Ontario.

Thanks to all that came out and made the night the great success that it was!
